Roll Label Unwind Positions (Face In/Out + Leading Edge)

Last updated: 2026-01-03

“Unwind” is the detail that makes labels look like they were printed wrong — when the print is fine and the roll spec is not. If you use an applicator, dispenser, or any machine feed, unwind is not optional.

Fastest way to get this right:

  1. Take a photo of your current roll mounted in the machine.
  2. Tell us the model number.
  3. Submit it on the quote form.

What “unwind” means (plain English)

Unwind describes how the labels come off the roll: whether the labels are wound face out or face in, and which edge comes off first (the “leading edge”).

  • Face out: the printed side faces outward on the roll.
  • Face in: the printed side faces inward on the roll.
  • Leading edge: top/bottom/left/right edge that peels off first.

The 8 common unwind configurations (no guessing)

Different industries number these positions differently, so we describe them in an unambiguous way.

Diagram showing eight roll label unwind positions (face in/out and leading edge directions)
If a vendor asks for “unwind position numbers”, avoid ambiguity: describe it as face in/out + leading edge.
Top edge leading Bottom edge leading Left edge leading Right edge leading
Face out Face out + top edge leading Face out + bottom edge leading Face out + left edge leading Face out + right edge leading
Face in Face in + top edge leading Face in + bottom edge leading Face in + left edge leading Face in + right edge leading

How to identify your unwind in 60 seconds

  1. Hold the roll so the labels feed off the top.
  2. Peel a label forward like your machine does.
  3. Note: is the print facing you (face out) or facing the liner (face in)?
  4. Note which edge moves first (top/bottom/left/right).

Why this matters for automated application

  • Orientation: the label can apply rotated or upside-down.
  • Sensing: some sensors expect a specific gap/orientation.
  • Speed: wrong unwind can cause curling, skewing, or misfeeds.

What we need from you:

  • Product photo + where the label goes (front/back/wrap)
  • Applicator/printer model (if machine applied)
  • Any existing roll (photo is perfect)
